LORI LOVECRAFT: ROAD TO KADATH PT. 2

As a youngster I didn't have a TV until I was about 13. But when we did get one, the first thing I discovered was Million Dollar Movie  which came on at one in the afternoon, and always had fun stuff to watch from the thirties and forties. Adventure comedies were the best, and the Road movies, featuring Bob Hope and Bing Crosby were my favorites. Great casts: Dorothy Lamour, Anthony Quinn, Hedy Lamarr, Robert Benchley...the list goes on. The humor was off beat and sublime, often breaking the third wall (as when Bob turns to the camera as Bing is about to break into a tune, "you can go for popcorn now, folks, he's going to sing.") There were talking animals, exotic locations and laughs galore. Lori was as much inspired by their antics as anything...so it was inevitable that I did a Road story told from Lori's point of view, with Bela Lugosi thrown in for good measure.

Be with us next week for part two of Road to Kadath

Our two HBO Tales from the Crypt covers for the week are This'll Kill Ya, starring Sonia Braga, who told me to make her look beautiful...it would have been hard not to. Also starrring Cleavon Little. Wouldn't you know my camera malfunctioned when I was shooting pictures of Ms. Braga. The other episode was The Ventriloquist's Dummy starrring Don Rickles and Bobcat Golthwaite...and it was a pleasure to meet them both. The picture hanging on the wall behind Don is Richard Donner who directed the episode.

G.I.JOE 14 PT. 2

Working on G.I.JOE was always a frustrating experience for me. First, there were so many characters; I found myself generally casting them and using reference from Hollywood personalities to get the likeness (For example, Peter Cushing was the model for Dr.Venom in this issue, and Burt Lancaster for Hawk). But, as my drawing improved and became more subtle as the series went along, the inked pages never reflected any improvement. The same line that was used on machinery was the same style of ink line that went on the faces and figures. Here's a look at what my pencil layouts looked like when I sent them into Marvel.

MAD MUMMY: SHE WHO WALKS IN BEAUTY PT 3

This week we continue the second of the Mad Mummy stories. When I started doing research on Egypt for this series, one of the interesting things I discovered was that the name Nefertiti meant " she who walks in beauty"...hence the title of this story. I also discovered that after the death of Pharoah Ankenaten, she disappeared and all reference to her and likenesses were destroyed. It was only centuries later that the wonderful statue of her was discovered and we could see why she earned the name.

This week's HBOTales From the Crypt bonus cover is The Reluctant Vampire, starring George Wendt and Malcolm McDowell. While I'm not sure if I met George on the set, I did run into last week at the Monsterpalooza convention in Pasadena and presented him with a print of the cover. Malcolm McDowell I somehow found so intimidating (too many screening of A Clockwork Orange ) that I never did approach to get a couple of photos for reference...thus the very poor likeness below. Also is one of the little roughs for the show.  I always did somewhere between three and six of these for each episode and then Silver and Donner chose one.
