MAD MUMMY: SHE WHO WALKS IN BEAUTY PT 2

This week we continue the second of the Mad Mummy stories. When I started doing research on Egypt for this series, one of the interesting things I discovered was that the name Nefertiti meant " she who walks in beauty"...hence the title of this story. I also discovered that after the death of Pharoah Ankenaten, she disappeared and all reference to her and likenesses were destroyed. It was only centuries later that the wonderful statue of her was discovered and we could see why she earned the name.

This week's HBO's Tales From the Crypt covers are "Strung Along" and "The Man Who was Death" The former was directed by Kevin Yagher, who designed the crypt keeper and starred one of the legends of Hollywood, Donald O'Connor. The latter was directed by Walter Hill and was one of the original trilogy of stories designed to introduce the series. The episode starred Bill Sadler, Mr. Death himself, in the lead. It was also one of only two covers that I didn't draw myself, turning that chore over to my studio mate at the time, Shawn McManus.

This weeks two HBO Tales From the Crypt bonus covers are Spoiled, starring the drop dead gorgeous Anita Morris and Staired in Horror, which might have been my favorite all time cover image from the series. A visual metaphor I can certainly relate to these days. lol.

LINDA LOVECRAFT: MIDNIGHT IN THE MEDINA

It's time for another Linda Lovecraft adventure. I had just seen Casablanca for the first time when I did this story and watching Claude Raines as Louie was an absolute delight. Throw in Fred Astaire, Greta Garbo, and Bob McGinnis and we're all set to go! Written by Mary Skrenes and perhaps my favorite Linda L. story. From Star*Reach Comics #5, 1974

THE MAD MUMMY:RESURRECTION Pt.3

It probably won't surprise anyone that my favorite horror fill of all time is The Mummy starring Boris Karloff. If you haven't seen it make a point of checking it out...it's worth the viewing. The movie was made at the time that the world was fascinated with the newly discovered tomb of Tutankhamun and makes use of the art and treasures that had been brought to light. (King Tut was the son of Akhenaten, the pharoah who fist causes our protagonist, Aten Ray, all his problems.)

(This was the incredible pinup editor Ian Nichols did for our first issue.)

Our Tales From the Crypt HBO Covers this week are "Split Personality", which Joel Silvers himself directed and starring Joe Pesci and two beautiful actresses in bikinis. I had a slight resemblence to our produced Gil Adler and during while I was talking a couple friends at the shoot, one of the girls starting waving furiously at me and smiling and quickly walking my way. When she got fairly close she stopped and announced to one and all: "You're not the man I thought you were." Gave my friends a big laugh. The other cover is for "Split Second" starring a young Brad Pitt, whom I never did get to meet.
